Heating Systems and Options

There are plenty of options when it comes to heating your home. Many properties in recent years have been constructed with integral central heating systems, but there are varieties even within such a generalisation.

Even if you live in a property that was constructed without a chimney, or which doesn't have any open fireplaces, there are still more options open to you than you may realise.

Heating is one of the basic requirements that many of us have in life. It sits alongside water, food and shelter as one of those important aspects that we need to survive and feel comfortable.

The advent of widespread central heating systems has meant that it is something that we may give little thought to. After all, central heating provides us with warmth extremely effectively and is fairly simple to operate - it's only when it goes wrong that many of us turn our thoughts to how it works and what other options might be available.

The easy availability of central heating has made massive changes to many properties. Usually supplied with a gas boiler and a number of radiators, such systems meant the end for many fireplaces and chimneys in this country. New properties were built without chimneys, while older properties saw radiators being installed and fireplaces being blocked.

In some cases this has limited the options that are now open to those looking to change the way in which their homes are heated.

Let's take a look at the options that are generally available - you'll spot that some are easier to install and maintain than others.

Starting with central heating, it's clear that this is already present in many homes. The actual fuel used can vary, with gas probably being the most common. Electric central heating and oil-powered are also possible.

Depending on the fuel being used, such systems can be cost effective, depending upon the fuel prices. If you don't already have such a system installed already then they can be expensive to put in place - boilers are an especially costly component of the overall setup.

Other choices tend to be of a more standalone nature. Starting with the most basic, an open fire could be an option if you already have chimneys in place. Many homes, particularly those of an older vintage, would have been built with the expectation that open fires would be used to heat multiple rooms. Today, it's possibly more usual to see them heating a smaller number of rooms of the house.

If you don't already have a chimney then you needn't be put off having a fire of some sort. Although an open fire might involve you having to get some serious construction work done, there are flueless alternatives that might do the job.

These are well worth investigating if you're intent on having flames available to create a great atmosphere, but want to do so at a lower cost. This is where electric fire suites have proved particularly popular with buyers.
