A look a home heating
There are few things more fundamental to our lives than our ability to heat our own homes. Though our options in this respect may sometimes appear limited, the reality is that we now have more choices than ever before.
If energy prices are rising and you're struggling to keep up, or if you have a heating system in place that is ineffective or simply ugly then there are solutions out there that can improve the situation.

Times have certainly changed since the earliest forms of home heating, although let's not forget that the Romans knew a thing or two about how to keep a house warm. Their use of underfloor heating is well known and it's intriguing to watch some new houses being built with similar systems to those perfected by the Romans some 2,000 years ago.
For all of our technological advances and achievements, there's no doubt that in some areas progress has been slow.
In the western world, it's become almost expected that we should have central heating in our homes. Indeed, studies show that UK houses have never been warmer. When central heating first started to be used regularly in offices up and down the country, it was soon the case that many of us wanted the same in our own homes.
We had got used to those warmer temperatures and we wanted more for ourselves. Quite how this now sits in terms of questions about global warming is an interesting issue and possibly one that is worth further debate.
For most of us, central heating is often a combination of a gas boiler, thermostat and set of radiators. We're likely to have at least one radiator in every room of the house.
This setup works relatively well - it allows us to have an easy and efficient way to heat the home. Some people grumble that they don't like the presence of the boiler and that radiators are unattractive to look at.
Such complaints are certainly justified and have only been increased by the rise of home stylish television programmes. You've probably seen them yourself - the basic concept usually involves a team of DIY experts looking to spruce up a house in no time at all.
The reality of home improvement is often different for the rest of us. We can't fit all of the improvements into the amount of time taken up by a short TV programme, but we do have the ability to make all sorts of changes.
Many viewers have been keen to buy into the sort of style tips provided by such shows. This website is, of course, dedicated to one such improvement - electric fireplaces. These are no longer seen simply as a way to heat a home - they are just as often being used in order to create an impression.
What we're talking about here is the elusive "wow" factor. The more that we see other homes being improved and glimpse into the world of celebrity living, the more it seems that we want to replicate what we're seeing. It's the case in many areas of home living and it's clearly also the case with heating appliances.
The use of the term "heating appliance" seems strangely out of sorts in this context. The reality is that we have moved beyond appliances in to the area of products that are meant for style, fashion and elegance as much as anything else.
Practical on its own is for yesterday. Style is for today and tomorrow.
